Making queries
The search page of the web site of ITB CompuPhase is based on the "ht://Dig" search engine.
In its simplest form, a query is just a list of keywords, like "axonometric" or "palette". If you give multiple words, the search results in:
- either the pages in which all words are present,
- or the pages that mention any single one of these words.
The "Match" selection list has a third option: "Boolean". With this
option, you can logically connect the keywords yourself, as in:
(axonometric or isometric) and animation
The Boolean match method knows how to deal with "not", "and", "or" and parenthesis. Contrary to common Boolean logic, however, the operator "not" is a binary operator: you cannot write "cat and not dog" or just "not dog" but you can write "cat not dog". Perhaps you should think of the operator "not" like the word "without".
The search engine also searches for synonyms, prefixes and suffixes for the keywords that you specify. That is, when you search for the keywork "color" (American spelling) you will get a lot of references to pages that contain the word "colour" --as we use the Brittish spelling mostly. An exact match is ranked higher than a "fuzzy" match, though.
Note that the search engine is case insensitive, but it makes a difference between hyphenated and non-hyphenated words. And by the way, this is a multilingual site, using the Dutch, French and English (UK spelling) languages.
